Kona - Surfing

Paul gives us some of his special liliquoi jam that he made himself. It's great on bagels for breakfast. Too bad we didn't feel comfortable bringing the unfinished jar in our suitcases home. Paul also brought us liliquoi juice which made a great drink mixed with either rum or tequila for pupus and drinks happy hours.

After breakfast, we hit the local open air markets for gifts to bring home. The Kona Farmers' Market is the first stop. My favorite part of the market is the extensive flower shop in the middle of the market. Each morning they bring fresh flowers from the Hilo area. Just $5 to $10 buys an amazing bouquet of tropical flowers.

Our next stop is Alii Gardens Marketplace. While there we see a large Kona spider literally shooting down a filament of web to the sidewalk from above. As we watched the spider wondering what possessed it to make such a bold move, we spy a large gecko waiting at the center of the spider's web for dinner to return home.

Where did my dinner go?

Since the weather has improved we deem it time to return to Kua Bay Beach.

Being a Sunday the beach is more crowded than earlier in the week, but we still find a good spot to hang out. Besides, surf's up.

At first we simply watch the local kids do tricks on the waves using just their bodies or boogie boards. It's truly amazing the spins and flips those kids can do on the waves.  Not just the boys too... some of the girls can blow all the boys away with their skills.

Wipeout!

The waves are irresistible to Peter who doesn't consider a trip to Hawaii to be complete without spending a day body surfing.

So does Suzy

It's Peter's birthday so after a day of beach fun we head for Happy Hour at the Royal Kona Resort with a large wrap around bar overlooking the ocean.

It's St Patrick's Day and everybody's in a festive mood.

Colors deepen as the sun sets. YES - we even get a green flash this evening. A fitting end for St Patrick's in Kona.
